As The Weeknd fans keep his new EP on repeat, the singer gave them a closer look at what went into crafting his latest material with a mini behind-the-scenes documentary entitled He Was Never There, uploaded to his YouTube channel Monday (Apr. 9).

The grainy, trippy video includes footage the R&B hitmaker recording vocals and listening back to tracks in the studio. Although the six-minute “docupoem” gives an intimate perspective on the vocalist's creative process, it still maintains the same dark, mysterious and alluring aura that's so quintessentially The Weeknd.

My Dear Melancholy dropped March 30 to rave reviews from fans, as all six tracks on the EP debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in its first week. The set's lead single, the lovelorn slow jam “Call Out My Name,” is already sitting at No. 4 on the chart.
