The Salzburg Festival plans to delve into delusion subsequent summer time, with new opera productions together with Mozart’s “Idomeneo,” by Peter Sellars; Offenbach’s “Orphée aux Enfers,” by Barrie Kosky; George Enescu’s “Oedipe,” by Achim Freyer; and Cherubini’s “Médée,” by Simon Stone.
“Mythology means going to the basis of every part and questioning what it means in our time,” the pageant’s creative director, Markus Hinterhäuser, mentioned in a phone interview about this version of the pageant, which might be his third on the helm. “Great mythological tales are at all times like a mirror — in each era, each interval.”
The pageant, which can run from July 20 via Aug. 31, is without doubt one of the most essential on the classical music calendar, bringing top-flight singers, administrators, musicians, conductors and orchestras — the home band is the Vienna Philharmonic — to the birthplace of Mozart.
With the “Idomeneo,” Mr. Hinterhäuser is reuniting Mr. Sellars as soon as extra with the daring conductor Teodor Currentzis and the tenor Russell Thomas. The three collaborated on the staging of Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” he started his tenure with in 2017. The Offenbach will carry Mr. Kosky, the ingenious creative director of the Komische Oper in Berlin, to the pageant. Enescu’s early 20th century work “Oedipe” is slowly being rediscovered. And the “Médée” will star Sonya Yoncheva within the title function.
Cecilia Bartoli will sing the title function in a manufacturing of Handel’s “Alcina” that may first be introduced within the spring on the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, the place she is the creative director. The pageant can even function Verdi’s “Simon Boccanegra,” carried out by Valery Gergiev; a reprise of Strauss’s “Salome” carried out by Franz Welser-Möst and starring Asmik Grigorian, who scored a serious success within the title function final summer time; and live performance variations of Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur,” with Anna Netrebko within the title function (she’s going to sing it on the Metropolitan Opera beginning on New York Year’s Eve), and of Verdi’s “Luisa Miller,” starring Plácido Domingo.
The Vienna Philharmonic has a full dance card. Riccardo Muti will lead it within the Verdi Requiem; Daniel Barenboim in Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder and Symphony No. 5; Herbert Blomstedt in Mahler’s Symphony No. 9; Bernard Haitink in Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7; and Mr. Welser-Möst in Wagner, Strauss and Shostakovich. Visiting orchestras will embody the Berlin Philharmonic, which might be led by its incoming chief conductor, Kirill Petrenko, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, led by its music director, Andris Nelsons.
The pageant will comprise two mini-festivals of contemporary and up to date composers. One will spotlight the music of the up to date French composer Pascal Dusapin, together with his operatic adaptation of Heiner Müller’s “Medeamaterial.” The different will function the music of Enescu, the Romanian-born composer, violinist and pianist whose early-20th-century works are slowly being rediscovered by new generations.
And a starry lineup of soloists will make their technique to Salzburg, together with the pianists Evgeny Kissin, Igor Levit, Maurizio Pollini, Grigory Sokolov and Mitsuko Uchida. (Mr. Hinterhäuser, a pianist, can even play on a few packages, together with William Kentridge’s well-traveled staging of Schubert’s “Winterreise” sung by Matthias Goerne.)
