Following the release of her Love and Compromise debut album, Mahalia is back with a fiery video for project standout "What You Did," alongside fellow U.K. singer Ella Mai.
The video is directed by KC Locke, who also worked with Mahalia on her "Simmer" visual earlier this year. The British duo pay homage to the legendary Aaliyah and her tomboy turn-of-the-century aesthetic shortly after the minute mark, when the scene shifts to black-and-white.
The cinematic clip finds Mahalia and Ella remaining calm and singing over the classic Cam'ron "Oh Boy" sample in a car that's surrounded by a scorching fire. Without flinching, the pair walk out like nothing is happening, as they hold hands and watch their Volvo burn to the ground.
In a September interview with Billboard, the Diary of Me artist explained what she hoped people would take from listening to her debut effort. "I hope that they listen to the album and feel honesty," the 21-year-old said. "I hope that they listen and don't feel like I'm being disingenous or dishonest. I hope people can find strength, especially young women to listen to this and feel strong."
