Lil Nas X gave fans exactly what they wanted on night three of the 2019 CMA Fest at Nashville's Nissan Stadium.
The "Old Town Road" rapper surprised the crowd midway through the music festival Saturday (June 8) to join Billy Ray Cyrus and Keith Urban for a performance of the hit viral song, which has topped the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks.
CMA Fest fans were initially disappointed when Lil Nas X didn't appear during Cyrus' set, but then erupted with cheers when the rapper unexpectedly appeared right before the next act — Miranda Lambert and Pistol Annies — was set to take the stage.
The crowd grew even more enthusiastic when Urban stepped on stage to sing a verse of "Old Town Road" and add some killer instrumental improvisations on the banjo.
Meanwhile, the rapper has shared a seemingly tongue-in-cheek explanation for one of the standout lines in "Old Town Road."
"When i said 'i got the horses in the back' it was in reference to reversing the ongoing climate change, water pollution, and catastrophic political climate we are witnessing in these trying times," Lil Nas X tweeted Saturday.
