On Tuesday night (March 27), The Weeknd posted a screenshot on Instagram a text conversation. The cryptic message reads, “Should we drop Friday? I'm indifferent to be honest.” The ambiguous post has fans salivating at the sheer possibility that the XO crooner is ready to drop a new record or album, considering Friday is the day new music is traditionally released.
Sources tell Billboard that The Weeknd is in fact working on new material. “This project is Abel taking it back to his roots,” reveals our source.
In 2011, The Weeknd rose to prominence with his masterful release House Balloons. Dubbed his magnum opus, The Weeknd quickly gained a legion fans and devotees because the mixtape's melancholic lyrics and seamless production. Last week, TMZ reported that The Weeknd was spotted in California shooting what appeared to be a music video for a new single.
Next month, The Weeknd will serve as a headliner at Coachella alongside Eminem and Beyoncé.
