Co-writer Diane Warren also made an appearance on keys.
Andra Day hit Jimmy Kimmel Live! Thursday night (Feb. 22) to perform a fiery rendition the Oscar-nominated record “Stand Up For Something.” The soulful singer also spoke a few words about the pending end DACA before the performance, dedicating the performance to the DREAMers.
“With the end DACA and the possibility deportation looming, we just want you guys to know that we stand with you and we will not stop fighting for you. We dedicate this performance to you guys tonight,” she said before opening up the heartfelt tune.
Backed by a full band and the song's co-writer Diane Warren on the keys, Day crooned in front a bright white screen illuminated with the message “Stand For Something” in multiple languages in red letters behind her.
Common dropped in midway to deliver a powerful verse over a flood jazzy chords and subtle drums. He finished with an equally moving message, saying, “Trump and congress are failing you. But we the people will fight till the end until we win the Dream Act. We the people, we stand with you.”
Common and Day will come together to perform “Stand Up For Something” once again on the Oscars stage on March 4. The song is nominated for best original song, earning Common his second nom and Diane Warren her ninth.
