Brittany Howard will release her debut solo album Jaime on Sept. 20, and ahead of the reveal, she’s dropped a powerful new song called “He Loves Me.” On the stripped-down track, the Alabama Shakes frontwoman’s soulful vocals shine alongside steady beats and pulsating guitar parts.
The singer says “He Loves Me” is a “very important track” on her forthcoming solo project. Inspired following the death of her older sister, Howard explains that the song was written from the perspective of being loved by God. In addition to her confessional lyrics, the song includes samples from a sermon by Houston-based pastor Reverend Terry K. Anderson, who she discovered on YouTube.
“‘It is a song I deeply want to share to help others realize loving and being loved by God doesn’t have to look the same for everyone,” Howard says in a statement. “When my older sister passed away, it took its toll on our family. We grew apart from one another and therefore, we grew apart from our family church. I thought God had intended to hurt us or punish us, but I later realized that I found God in music and I found God in my voice.
“I learned that He always had a plan for myself and my family. That is what ‘He Loves Me’ is about,” she adds. “It is my greatest realization that He has never left me. All those years that I had turned away, I was still receiving His absolute love and forgiveness.”
Howard will launch her North American headlining tour on Aug. 17. “He Loves Me” follows the release of previous song “Stay High.” Her debut solo project is out Sept. 20 via ATO Records.
